Opinion remains divided over the final years of the series. It is widely believed that Colin Baker's Doctor is too unlikeable to work properly, the budget constraints were too obvious too often (not helped by direction that was often flat), Peri and Mel were annoying companions, and McCoy's era in particular suffers from stories that didn't make enough sense (even McCoy has admitted that his favourite serial, Doctor Who: Ghost Light: Part One (1989), had a story he didn't understand). Terrance Dicks said: "There was a decline without a doubt. I think the people working on it, particularly John Nathan-Turner, were not fit for purpose, as it were. Colin Baker, for example, never got a chance with that silly costume, which I thought was a great shame. I was sorry but I wasn't surprised when they took it off." Mark Gatiss once commented: "Things were undoubtedly getting better, just when the programme was cancelled, but there was still a sort of muddled quality, an almost perverse refusal to tell a straightforward story that I found very frustrating."
