George Lucas had hoped that the film would earn as much money as E.T. - L'extra-terrestre (1982), but it faced early competition with Mr. Crocodile Dundee II (1988), Big (1988) and Rambo III (1988). It was not a financial flop; with strong international, home video, and television sales, it did make a profit.
