After Elisabeth Sladen's death and the series' cancellation. Russell T. Davies' successor Steven Moffat decided to leave Sarah Jane Smith's in-universe status undeclared. Thus, he decided not to include a scene in Doctor Who (2005) where a heartbroken Doctor learns that Sarah Jane passed away.
