According to the 2019 biography of Mel Brooks by Patrick McGilligan, it was producer Jonathan Sanger's idea to option this project after his babysitter urged him to read De Vore and Bergren's script. Brooks agreed to make it a Brooksfilm production, and executive producer Stuart Cornfeld suggested Sanger meet with David Lynch. He liked the young director, and nervously screened Eraserhead - La mente che cancella (1977) for Brooks, who liked it as well as its director. Thereafter, Brooks regularly referred to Lynch as James Stewart from Venus.
