The role of Thurston Howell III was specifically written for Jim Backus, who was personal friends with Sherwood Schwartz. However, at the time, Backus was not immediately available, and he was too expensive an actor to hire for a supporting role. Eventually Backus became available at the last-minute, and liked the script enough to join, and CBS approved the extra money to hire Backus.
