J.R.R. Tolkien drew heavily from Norse mythology, especially the viking epic Volsung Saga, for inspiration. Norse mythology describes various mystical rings that are used by the gods in the creation of their worlds, but they are not evil as they are in Tolkein's tale, but simply magic. Rings are often the centerpiece in various parables and legends of the ancient Scandanavian religion. What is very evil in Volsung Saga is the Rheingold, a big goldmine at the center of the earth that all men are battling for. The Volsung Saga even brings Atilla the Hun into the battle, as well as iconic mythological figures like Siegfried and Brunhilde. Tolkien essentially blended these aspects of Norse mythology in the creation of his story.
