In the book, Snape's (Alan Rickman's) death originally takes place at the Shrieking Shack, a place where he has a significant personal history (as a boy, he was nearly killed there by Remus Lupin in werewolf form, but that information never made it into the movies). The art directors suggested and moved the location (with J.K. Rowling's agreement) to the boathouse in order to make it more dramatic and poignant. Art director Andrew Ackland-Snow added, "We wanted to get him out from, not a conventional interior, but from that kind of box, to do it in a more dramatic atmosphere."
