The vast exterior set of the GPO (General Post Office), cost IR£1.5 million, which RTE News described as the most expensive, and largest set built in Ireland at the time. As Ireland has no studio backlots large enough, the decision was made to shoot on location in Dublin, re-purposing the huge derelict "Richmond (Lunatic) Asylum" site, as the exterior street set, which was close to the other locations. By a stunning coincidence, the existing derelict building from 1815, set dressed to be the damaged GPO, had actually be designed by the architect of the GPO itself, as part of the asylum. The set was built on site to south of the Nursing Home (behind the Mansion House facade), in the area west of the Dublin Bus Broadstone/Phibsborough Depot. By the 2020s the entire Grangegorman Mental Health campus site, had been re-purposed as the TUD (Technological University Dublin) Campus, with the site opened up to the public as well. The former site of the "Michael Collins" street set, is as of 2021, located in the East Quad, of TUD Grangegorman with the building previously used as the GPO facade, now fully re-furbished and re-named "The Lower House".
