Patrick Troughton's finale "The War Games" ended with The Doctor regenerating for the 2nd time when the Time Lords exile The Doctor to Earth. However, at the end of "The War Games", we don't see The 3rd Doctor. This was the first and only time we don't see The Doctor change when regenerating. At the time of filming, The 3rd Doctor had not been cast. On September 19th 1969, 3 months after the finale of The War Games was broadcast, Jon Pertwee was announced to replace Patrick Troughton as The Doctor and Jon Pertwee made his debut in the Series 7 opening story "Spearhead from Space", which the newly regenerated 3rd Doctor steps out of the TARDIS and collapses.
