In Alejandro Jodorowsky's failed adaptation (and documented in the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary), Paul would have died near the end, presumably killed by Lady Fenring, by having his throat slit. However, his spirit would be shown to possess everyone on Arrakis. Essentially, he would expand his consciousness and be many places at once, which of course, is what the Kwisatz Haderach is meant to do.
