According to Jordan Vogt-Roberts, several first-person shooter like scenes from the film are derived from his love of FPS games like Call of Duty. In fact, the name of the character Mason Weaver is actually taken from the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) where two different characters were named Mason and Weaver. Also, the game deals with Vietnam War themes like this movie.
