Entertainment site Deadline reported in March 2022 that sitcom veteran Meg DeLoatch, who was brought in ahead of Season 4, exited the series ahead of its recently ordered Season 5. DeLoatch reportedly left to focus on development of new shows under her overall deal with CBS Studios. She previously succeeded series creator Jim Reynolds, whose departure was announced in April 2021. Upon his dismissal, it was reported that he faced complaints "regarding comments and other race-related issues over a period of time." DeLoatch was tapped to take over that June. An overhaul of the series' writing staff was is expected once DeLoatch's successor is named.
