Adam McKay originally suggested Meryl Streep's character to have a Suze Orman sort of look, but Streep was curious as to why so many Republican women have the blond curls hairstyle, and she wanted a very Republican look. After fitting with the outfits, they went for it. Any time Streep's personal hairstylist Tony Ward did her wig and hair, if he'd push it a little higher on top, she'd say "Don't try to make it look pretty. I like it when it has this flat weird thing!"
