Director Rolf de Heer said actor Damon Gameau's limited experienced worked for the film. "His character arc is one of increasing confidence and growth, and as we shot largely in sequence, we can see not only the character grow, but Damon as an actor," - and a rider - "by the end as his character was, Damon was doing things that would have been inconceivable at the beginning of the shoot."
