Director Merian C Cooper wanted Jean Harlow for Ann but couldn't get her from MGM so cast Fay Wray and had her wear a blonde wig. A pair of 20"Kong models were made and stop motion animation was used for his movements., A giant paw was created for scenes in which he held Ann, San Pedro harbour was used for the shipboard location and Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium housed the theatre scene s while other scenes were shot on the RKO lot. In the finale with the planes Merian C Cooper and Ernest B Schoedsack played the pilot and gunner respectively. Several scenes were cut after initial release for being too violent. Close ups of Kong sticking people in his mouth, Kong disrobing Ann (too sexy). All were restored for the 70's re release except the one of sailors falling into a ravine and being eaten by giant spiders. Robert Armstrong made swome128 films, mainly 2nd features. He made such an impression in Kong he went on to work with more monkeys in Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. At the outset Merian Cooper promised Fay Wray that she'd have the tallest, darkest leading man in Hollywood but omitted to mention that he'd also be the hairiest.
