Screen rights for the stage show sold for $9.5 million in 1978, about $39.2 million in 2020 dollars. It broke the record set when Warner Brothers paid $5.5 million for the screen rights to My Fair Lady (1964). Paramount Pictures made Popeye - Braccio di ferro (1980) to make up for being outbid.
