One of the tidbits of trivia that has been well established is that Eastwood hated smoking, especially cigars, but consented to use them as a prop because Leone insisted, and because he figured it would help him portray his character's surliness anyway. At first this doesn't seem like much of a compromise until you consider that in all three films Eastwood had to keep a cigar in his mouth 90% of the time.
