Most of the Yamato crew were represented as young (teenage almost), since space travel is much more suitable to younger people. However, Captain Okita (who should be around 40) is seen as having a white beard, a point of humour for Leiji Matsumoto: "At that time I was 36 years old, and people in their forties just seemed so adult!".
