It was reported by Variety on June 16, 2021 that Gary Cole was in talks for a major role in season 19. At the time, some speculated he may be taking over Gibbs' position since Mark Harmon was expected to only be in a few episodes in season 19. It was then confirmed on June 21 that Cole will be a series regular and will be playing character FBI Special Agent Alden Park. Details about Cole's character weren't released. It was also revealed he isn't replacing Harmon's though Cole is expected to help fill the void left by Harmon's reduced on-screen presence next season.
