The early scene where the Tim Robbins character has his orientation, where the orientator recites his lines with rapid-fire delivery and with no care whether the other person is listening, often punctuating his sentences with "...or they dock you!" is very similar to a scene in Nick mano fredda (1967) where the new inmates are given an orientation by a trustee, with him often punctuating his sentences with "...you spend a night in the box!" Paul Newman starred in both movies.
