Scenes deleted from Star Trek II included one wherein Spock made note to Admiral Kirk of Saavik's half-Romulan heritage. In another draft of the script, Spock and Saavik would converse in the Vulcan language and would have included the revelation about her mixed ancestry. In the end, her Vulcan-Romulan heritage was only hinted at, such as with her tears at Spock's funeral, but never directly mentioned on-screen.
