Ben Kingsley, David Suchet, Alan Webb, and Lindsay Anderson were considered for the role of Emperor Palpatine. Alan Webb was originally cast, with Ian McDiarmid being second choice. But Webb had to pull out because of his declining health. Indeed, he died during the few weeks of shooting.
