Counting the two crossovers Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator 2 (2007), this movie is the seventh installment of the Alien franchise. However, this film establishes a new backstory that purposely ignores the events of the two AvP movies, which have since been all but decanonized and are not referred to in most official Alien-related media. Most people therefore consider Prometheus the fifth film in the franchise.
