During production, Gary Trousdale rescued an injured owl from the Los Angeles river. After taking the bird to a vet, he kept it in a cage to serve as the model for the Great Owl. After filming, Trousdale released the owl, and said he saw it land on a roof a mile away next to another owl, and the two birds flew off together.
