When Barnabas first meets Elizabeth shortly after being released from his chained coffin by Willie Loomis, he tells her that the Collins History Book did not tell of his "great-great grandfather's" marriage after he moved to England and that he had a son. Barnabas later tells Elizabeth that he is the sole-surviving member of his family. Barnabas, of course, never moved to England nor had a son. But, both the omission of his marriage to the witch, Angelique Bouchard, and the fabrication of his going to England was facilitated by his father, Joshua Collins, to both protect the Collins family's reputation and keep the people of Collinsport from finding out the truth about his son after being cursed as a vampire by Angelique. Furthermore, Barnabas is the sole-surviving member of his family, as his father, his mother, Naomi, and sister, Sarah, were all dead, with the latter two dying before Barnabas was chained into his coffin.
