A persistent theme in the storylines about Randall's childhood is the fact that despite their best intentions and love for their son, Jack and Rebecca Pearson repeatedly show that they are naive and under-informed about the realities of raising a Black child. One obvious example of this is Jack obliviously telling Randall that he doesn't "see color" when he looks at him. But there are also much more subtle examples of the Pearsons' cluelessness on this matter: for example, they originally named him "Kyle," so until they changed his name to Randall, they had given their three children names that all started with Ks--meaning that together their children's initials were KKK.
