In a July 13, 1982, article in the New York Times, Janet Maslin reported that the inspiration for the Russian Tea Room scene came from an actual encounter that Dustin Hoffman had with Jon Voight (who had been his costar in Midnight Cowboy) in that restaurant. While Hoffman was perfecting the look, sound, and physicality of the Dorothy character, he would sometimes go out to public places to see how convincingly he could "pass" as a woman. When he ran into Voight at the Russian Tea Room, he acted like a female fan of Voight, and Voight had no idea that the person he was speaking to was both a man and Dustin Hoffman.
