The first Rocky film since Rocky Balboa (2006) (which was co-distributed with Columbia Pictures) and the first in the Creed saga to be distributed theatrically in the US by MGM after they formed a joint venture with Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures to theatrically distribute some of their films in America. (Warner Bros., who co-financed and distributed the previous Creed - Nato per combattere (2015), was still involved in co-producing the second film; however, they ended up co-financing in exchange for international theatrical distribution rights as well as home entertainment distribution on a worldwide basis). At the domestic box office, Creed II had the largest Thanksgiving opening for a live action film in 2018, even outperforming the first Creed, and became MGM's first successful theatrical hit since Operazione Valchiria (2008). The huge box office success of Creed II culminated in MGM and Annapurna's 2019 resurrection of United Artists (which had released the first five Rocky films), as they expanded their joint venture and re-branded Annapurna's one-time theatrical distribution arm under the United Artists Releasing banner on the original studio's centennial.
