While a fair amount of fans speculate that Lex Luthor was working for Darkseid to get rid of the various super-beings and aliens on Earth, it's entirely possible that Luthor was acting on his own volition to kill Superman and he learned of Darkseid's ambitions to claim Anti-Life on Earth through his research in the Kryptonian Ship.
