The dragon Haku's movements were based on the twisting motions of an eel swimming. For the scenes when he is being attacked Miyazaki brought up the example of a live eel in a fish-market before gutting. When he found none of his animators had ever witnessed this before, Miyazaki sarcastically commented 'Japanese culture is doomed.'
