The Rudyard Kipling quote "Down to Gehenna or up to the Throne, He travels the fastest who travels alone." that is said by General Erinmore as a way of telling Schofield and Blake that they must travel through hell in order to complete their mission. Gehenna is a valley in Israel used for burning trash in ancient times, and mistakenly thought to be analogous to the Christian concept of Hell.
