Set designer Roger Ford created two houses for the movie - Mr. McGregor's and Beatrix Potter's - which allowed him some creative liberty while also reflecting usual lake house architecture of the Lake District in England (the film was actually shot in Australia). For McGregor's house, Ford "lifted" the interior to make it brighter and more child-friendly than the dark wood-paneled manor of the books.
