According to Ang Lee, the film's screenplay drew influences from monster tales like King Kong (1933) and Frankenstein (1931); fantasies like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, and Faust; and most particularly Greek mythological tragedies.
