When suggesting superhero code-names for himself, Dick Grayson mentions "Nightwing" as a possibility. In comics, Grayson has used the Nightwing identity on-and-off since 1984. The older Grayson wanted both to distance himself from the youthful "Robin" identity, and to ascertain his independence from his mentor, Batman.
