For this film Heath Ledger became the first person to win an Oscar for portraying a comic book character and the fourth to be nominated, after Al Pacino for Dick Tracy (1990), Paul Newman for Era mio padre (2002), and William Hurt for A History of Violence (2005). All four men were nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category.
