In the director's commentary, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe explain that the names of the horses on Maximus' breastplate, "Argento" and "Scatto" (not Scarto, the movie's subtitles are wrong), mean silver and trigger (Argento=silver, Scatto=mechanical latch, or trigger). Silver was the name of the horse ridden by the Lone Ranger, and Trigger was the name of the horse ridden by Roy Rogers.
