The character of Richard "Dick" Grayson first appeared in Detective Comics #38 (April 1940), created by the writer Bill Finger and the artists Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. He was depicted as an orphaned circus performer who became Bruce Wayne's legal ward and Batman's original sidekick. He was the most popular sidekick in comics, and inspired the creation of several other kid sidekicks.
