Simon Pegg claimed that he based the character Jaylah after Jennifer Lawrence's character Ree from Un gelido inverno (2010). In that film, Ree goes off across the mountain wilderness in search of her criminal father, who has vanished. In this film, Jaylah, who is stranded on Altamid, escaped being imprisoned from Krall, who murdered her father.
