Brian De Palma took the idea of the train station scene from the Russian movie La corazzata Potemkin (1925), which includes a classic massacre scene on a set of steps where a carriage rolls down as well. The sailors who get caught in the crossfire in this movie are a tribute to the sailors of the Potemkin cruiser. The baby carriage rolling down the steps idea also appeared in earlier films, including Il dittatore dello stato libero di Bananas (1971) and Brazil (1985). Brazil also featured Robert De Niro.
