In order to give the film an ambiguous setting, the cities in the film were designed to be futuristic, as seen in the anime, but there was also Oriental and Aztec influences in the designs. Modern technology is also present such as gasoline fueled cars and cellphones, along with futuristic technology like touch screen desks and a motorcycle that can fold into a pocket shaped contraption. This was due to the fact that the film was set in a multicultural version of Asia, but it was actually shot in the United States and Mexico.
