When Alana and Gary are reading newspapers as President Richard Nixon delivers an address about the oil crisis, Gary looks at an ad for the pornographic film La vera gola profonda (1972) before glancing at Alana. This is both a sly nod to Gary's attraction to Alana and a sly nod to the Watergate scandal that was engulfing Nixon's White House and had reached a fever pitch at the time the film is set, in the fall of 1973.
