Gavin MacLeod and Ted Knight had worked together several times before being cast in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, including once in MacLeod's previous TV series, Un equipaggio tutto matto: One of Our Engines Is Missing (1963). They both were also in Gli intoccabili: The Big Train: Part 1 (1961) and Twelve Hours to Kill (1960). Knight also appeared in Un equipaggio tutto matto: The Fountain of Youth (1964), but MacLeod did not.
