The character of Kevin Wendall Crumb is revealed to have created his multiple personalities as a result of traumatic abuse from his psychotic mother and is also diagnosed with schizophrenia, the combination of which gives rise to alternate personas in his psyche that are different individuals. This is pretty much the same 'origin story' of the serial killer Francis Dolarhyde/The Great Red Dragon from Thomas Harris' novel 'Red Dragon', Dolarhyde, who, following nightmarish abuse from a family member, began to suffer from a form of schizophrenia that drove him to kill people. He was portrayed three times in media: by Tom Noonan in Manhunter - Frammenti di un omicidio (1986), Ralph Fiennes in Red Dragon (2002), and Richard Armitage on Hannibal (2013).
