In the first episode, the character Estelle Wicks complains to Jonathan about old people. Jonathan tells her to appreciate them since many people do not live long enough to become old. The show's two main stars died under sixty: Victor French (Mark Gordon) died at 54, before the fifth season was finished and Michael Landon (Jonathan Smith/Arthur Thompson) followed a few years later, also at 54. A number of guest stars also passed away in middle age or earlier leading to rumours of a curse on the series. These include Haing S. Ngor (55), James Troesh (54), Bibi Besch (54), Tim Choate (49), Paul Walker (40), Eric Douglas (46), Judy Carmen (52), Dean Dittman (57), Dack Rambo (52) and Kim Walker (32). Despite any claims of a curse, other guest stars such as Dick Van Dyke and James Earl Jones, Margie Impert, Darren McGavin, Tom Sullivan (have) ended up living well past that age. Indeed Eddie Albert lived to the ripe old age of 99.
