On their travels, Fogg, Passepartout, and Fix encounter several characters who are depictions of real-life historical figures. In France, Fogg saves the president of France, Adolphe Thiers, from an assassination attempt. Marie Joseph Louis Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) was the second elected president of France and first president of the French Third Republic. In Yemen, they are aided by Jane Digby (Lindsay Duncan) and her husband Sheik Medjuel El Mezjuel Mezrab (Faical Elkihel). Jane Elizabeth Digby (1807-1881) was an English aristocrat whose unconventional-for-the-time life choices made her a figure of rumor and fascination. She had several affairs (some of which resulted in children) and four marriages, the last of which was to Mezrab (c. 1827-?). Another real person depicted in this show is Bass Reeves (1838-1910). Played in this show by Gary Beadle, Reeves was the first Black US deputy marshal west of the Mississippi, with a record of 3000 arrests.
