TWA, Trans World Airlines, the one used in this movie, was a real airline from 1930-2001, when it died in bankruptcy. Howard Hughes had a controlling ownership interest in the 1930s through '60s. It was the airline involved in the crashes that killed Knute Rockne in 1931 and Carole Lombard in 1942. But it became known as the "Airline of the Stars" in 1946 after Hughes piloted a number of celebrities cross-country in The Star of California.
