The Triffid population had grown on an unexpected scale. They had been raised on plantations by private buyers in the South but had broken loose. They formed in half a dozen nurseries where there can be over a hundred of them. The Triffids began to overrun the planet as soon as there was no one to stop them and more were maturing every day. The Triffid population had grown to hundreds of thousands because they can grow almost anywhere (they had a permanent foothold in Cornwall and a hundred Triffids had moved to the Channel Islands), and start collecting in a matter of days. They could regrow a stinger if they lost it and when they stung someone they left a scarlet mark on their victims. When the Triffids try to sting people they can miss if they misjudge the height of their victims.
