Although some of the Susan Alexander character was based on superstar Marion Davies, the great majority was not. In fact, very few similarities can be linked to Davies. Unlike the Alexander character, Davies never worked in a music store, never sang in an opera, never married Hearst, never left Hearst, never owned a saloon, never gave negative interviews about Hearst. Unlike the Alexander character, Davies had a successful, 20-year career as a film star, was very ambitious as an actress, was immensely popular with her peers, maintained many life-long friendships within the Hollywood community, enjoyed being a hostess to the world's elite, and never went broke.
