After the release of Star Wars - Il risveglio della Forza (2015), Rey's parentage became a hotly debated topic. Luke Skywalker was frequently named as a family member, possibly even her father, until Kylo Ren revealed in this film that her parents were just a couple of anonymous Jakku junk traders. According to Simon Pegg who worked on The Force Awakens, writer/director J.J. Abrams originally had very different plans, intending for Rey to have a "relevant lineage". However, Last Jedi director Rian Johnson stated that Abrams never shared these plans with him, leaving him free to come up with his own ideas. Fans have since speculated that Kylo Ren may have lied, making use of Rey's insecurity in order to get her to join him, and that Abrams may set the record straight in Star Wars - L'ascesa di Skywalker (2019). Abrams eventually clarified that Kylo Ren did not lie, and Rey's parents were not important; however, he also wasn't totally honest, as her grandfather was revealed to be Sheev Palpatine/Darth Sidious.
