Jake Gyllenhaal was actually 19 years old, while playing a 16 year old high school student. Maggie Gyllenhaal was 23 playing his older sister. Though the film doesn't reveal her age, the shooting script specifies that Elizabeth Darko is supposed to be 19 years old.
